The term schizophrenia is of Greek origin. It consists of two parts: skhizeim (to split) and phrenos (mind). It is a mental disorder the first symptoms of which usually appear in late puberty age or later. It is commonly diagnosed between 15-25 (men) and 25-35 (women). Nevertheless it can occur at any age. This mental disorder has a tendency of slow development and people with schizophrenia do not suspect they have it for quite a time.

Sometimes we can also observe a very sudden and rapid development of the disorder.
It is a very complex brain disorder, chronic and serious. 1% of the world population suffers from schizophrenia. There exists a hypothesis that schizophrenia is in fact a group of illnesses caused by defective neuronal development of the brain of the embryo that later develops into schizophrenia.

The work of brain

Multiple nerve cells constitute the brain. Messages between nerve cells are transmitted with the help of branches that each of nerve cells possesses. A special chemical – neurotransmitter sends the messages from one nerve cell to another. A person who is suffering from schizophrenia experiences problems with the functioning of this system.
