Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder. It cannot be completely cured but with the help of medications and psychological therapy its symptoms can be significantly weakened and a person can get the change to effectively function in the society. A person with schizophrenia has hallucinations and delusion, is emotionally detached, loses interest in life and has difficulties with perceiving information and concentration.

We do not have a special test that can set the diagnosis of schizophrenia. A mental health specialist draws a conclusion judging from the symptoms the patient has. A certain physical testing exists however and it can be of help when there is a need to differentiate between schizophrenia and other disorders that might have the same symptoms (brain tumor, drug use, seizure and metabolic disorders).

The term schizophrenia is of Greek origin. It consists of two parts: skhizeim (to split) and phrenos (mind). It is a mental disorder the first symptoms of which usually appear in late puberty age or later. It is commonly diagnosed between 15-25 (men) and 25-35 (women). Nevertheless it can occur at any age. This mental disorder has a tendency of slow development and people with schizophrenia do not suspect they have it for quite a time.
